Episode 1. Boost Your Brain: Empowering Your Brain Through Nutrition and Supplementation

An interview with Michael Jurgelewicz, DC

About this Episode

In our first episode of the Empowered Through TBI Podcast, Joanne Phillips, MS, RD, interviews Dr. Michael Jurgelewicz, DC.

Our brains require special nutrients to help our brain and brain cells communicate and run properly.  In this podcast, you will learn about some key nutrients that help make up and energize the cells of our brain to help optimize our brain function with memory, focus, and overall cognition.  You will also learn about lifestyle factors that can help you increase a very special protein called Brian Derived Neurotropic Factors.

Show Notes

Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) is an important mechanism for protecting the brain. It is semi-permeable; that is, it allows some materials to cross but prevents others from crossing. The BBB protects the brain from “foreign substances” in the blood that may injure the brain and maintains a constant environment for the brain.

DHA is found in fish oil.  It supports brain development and protects neurological function. One of the major building blocks of the brain, the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is critical for optimal brain health and function at all ages of life

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a vital component of all neuron’s cell membranes, the protective layer that surrounds your cells. Human research suggests PS may help support overall brain wellness. PS is beneficial for memory and concentration and helps maintain healthy levels of cortisol, the hormone that is secreted when you are under stress.

Acetyl L-Carnitine is a form of L-carnitine that helps energize the brain. It plays an important role in the transfer and utilization of long-chain fatty acids, which are used in the production of energy. This is crucial, as the brain needs energy to function properly. Acetyl l-carnitine supports healthy levels of important chemicals needed for memory, focus, and learning.

Glycerophosphocholine  (GPC) is a naturally occurring compound in all our cells and mother’s milk. GPC is a supportive nutrient for the brain and a building block for phospholipids, the main components of cell membranes. GPC helps boosts acetylcholine production which helps improve memory, mental focus and reaction time.  Without the presence of this nutrient in the brain, we could not think, sleep or remember.

CDP Choline also know as Citicoline is a noortropic due to its involvement with cell membranes and neurotransmitters, choline helps preserve your memory and  other types of cognitive decline especially as you get older. Citicoline consumption promotes brain metabolism by enhancing the synthesis of acetylcholine and restoring phospholipid content in the brain, both of which positively affect memory and other brain activity.

Ginkgo biloba herbal extract provides critical antioxidant protection and enhances ‘brain microcirculation,’ which is the flow of blood through the body’s smallest vessels. Ginkgo helps to supports healthy mood, mental focus and energy

Vinpocetine is a highly potent vasodilator, acting by direct relaxation of the vascular smooth muscle. Vinpocetine enhances cerebral blood flow.  Vinpocetine has been shown to cross the blood brain barrier and protect neurons. It also has shown to benefit focus, memory and learning.
